1080x1350px (4:5 portrait) takes up the most feed space. 1080x1080px (square) is also standard. Avoid landscape - it appears smaller in feeds.
Instagram compresses images. Upload at exactly 1080px width to avoid resampling. Higher resolution images get downscaled and can lose sharpness.
Upscale if your source is below platform minimums. But don't upscale beyond platform recommendations - a 4000px image will be compressed to 1080px anyway.
